Street Tree Selection

The Urban Forestry Division is the agency responsible for street tree species selection. Choosing the species appropriate for a given street is based upon several factors:
  • Size of the area in which the tree is planted
  • Presence of other infrastructure; power lines, meters, street lights, etc
  • Predominate existing species on block
  • Type of street; residential, commercial, industrial
  • Type of planting; streetside tree, median island
  • Proximity of structures

The arboriculture profession simply states “Right Tree, Right Place .” The intent of a well thought out species selection is to: provide optimum shade, reduce energy use, provide an optimum growing area, minimize infrastructure conflict, and generally increase the ecosystem benefits.

UFD inspectors choose species based upon all of these considerations. Nevertheless, the Division is always willing to discuss species options with residents. The input of residents is important and this is particularly so on large block plantings, in new developments, and on streetscape improvement projects.

UFD hopes this webpage supplies you with all of the information needed to understand how to street tree species are selected. If you need further information please contact the Division at (213) 847-3077.
