The Urban Forestry Division (UFD) controls the planting, care, inspection, permitting, and maintenance of the greenscape contained in the City of Los Angeles ' public right-of-way (ROW). UFD is also responsible for ensuring that egress and ingress of vehicles and pedestrians in the ROW is not impeded by vegetation, whether the vegetation is growing in the public ROW or on private property. Additionally, UFD has control over ensuring the native trees in the City of Los Angeles are protected.
The Division performs the inspection, permitting, enforcement, tree pruning, tree planting, tree removal, and landscape maintenance with City personnel. When the City's budget allows, tree pruning and landscape maintenance are also performed by outside contractors.
The Division also maintains the over 300 acres of irrigated median islands within the City. Other types of ROW improvements, for instance grade separations occurring where adjacent streets are at different elevations, are maintained as well.
The City protects several native tree species. The Division is responsible for the oversight of the protected trees. Additionally, the Division is staffed by urban forest managers and arborists. Numerous City agencies utilize UFD staff to consult regarding tree-related issues.
The Division continues to investigate ways to improve, broaden our services, and provide a better product to the City's residents. The Division invites you to contact us with any questions you may have at (213) 847-3077.
