SPECIES CHARACTERISTICS:
Deciduous, broadleaf tree. Slow growth rate, 60' in height, 20 - 40 ' spread. Columnar spreading, erratic, somewhat asymmetrical when young.
FOLIAGE:
Simple leaf, netted venation. Alternate arrangement. Broad fan shape resembles the leaflets of maidenhair fern. Entire margins, coriaceous surface texture. Emarginated tips,
1 - 4" wide.. Light green turning yellow-gold in the Fall clustered 3 - 5 on short petioles.
FLOWERS:
Dioecious; Male flowers long and slender catkins; female long stalks usually in pairs.
FRUIT:
Globular, orange-yellow drupe, foul smelling pulpy fruit.
BARK:
Smooth, gray.
EXPOSURE:
Full sun, partial shade, heat, aridity and cold;
Hardiness: Sunset zones: 1 - 9, 14 - 24.
SOIL:
Deep, loose, well drained.
WATER:
Low water need.
PRUNING:
Prune only as needed to maintain shape and provide clearance.
USES:
Accent, background, foliage, foundation planting, right of way, shade, specimen.
COMMENTS:
Use only male grafted varieties.
