BRIDGES, TUNNELS, STAIRWAYS
AND RETAINING WALLS
The Special Projects Division constructs and repairs many of the City's bridges (only from bridge deck and above at this time), tunnels, retaining walls, and public stairways. Recently we have constructed a number of bulkheads both above and below roads in the interest of public safety. Many roadways were washed out or severely damaged during the nearly historical rains of 2004-2005. As states of emergency were declared by the Mayor and the Governor of the State of California the City became eligible for federal assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Highway Administration. A total of forty-two roadway reconstruction projects have been authorized by these agencies to be constructed by the Special Projects Division over an estimated three-year timeline, and the City will be reimbursed for the costs incurred.
